Calling all singers ages 12-18: It’s time to audition!

Come to our Youth Chorale auditions this Thursday, May 6 from 4-5 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bangor.

What to bring: Your voice is all you need.
What to expect: You will sing with a large group of singers to show what your voice is like and can do among other singers. You will sing in smaller groups as well so we can get the full picture.

Celebrate National Poetry Month with song on April 11

The Bangor Area Children’s Choir’s annual spring concert promises to offer a garden of verses with songs inspired by classical and contemporary poetry. Artistic Director Steve Weston has selected works that will guide listeners into the ordered and rhythmic landscape of Philip Silvey’s “Bloom,” all the way through to the free-growing tangle of “Hist Whist” and “Tumbling Hair” by E. E. Cummings.

The April 11 program also features a contemporary piece based on the poem “I Dream a World” by Langston Hughes, along with a pair of rollicking folk dance tunes. A sound chant titled “Ta Tikee Tei” by contemporary composer Sid Rabinovitch showcases the oldest form of song in a very modern way: the composition offers complex rhythmic gymnastics but contains only two real words.

“There are many elements of music that make it either beautiful or entertaining,” says Steve Weston. “Composers, for hundreds of years, have used poetry and various forms of text to bring the meaning of their music to their listeners. Text brings meaning while the musical setting enhances the mood. I chose the settings of poetry and folklore for this concert with a purpose, either for their beauty or their cultural richness.”

Columbia Street Baptist Church in Bangor will host the concert at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 11. The performance is open to the public; admission is free and donations are always welcome.

Due to snow and slick driving conditions, choir rehearsal for Tuesday, January 19 is canceled. Please note scheduling for make-up rehearsals below:

Saturday, January 23
Treble Choir: 9:00-10:00 a.m.
Youth Chorale: 10:15-noon

Join us for our Winter Concert, Jan. 31

Join us at Columbia Street Baptist Church on Sunday, January 31 for our first full-scale concert of the season. The program features a good bit of British, plus bits and bobs from the New World as well.

If you missed out on our annual cookie dough fundraiser, Jim Paton will be on hand with additional dough tubs to feed your sweet tooth. Just don’t break out the spoons for snacking during the concert.

As always, the 3:00 p.m. concert is free and open to the public. (Donations are always welcome!)

Reminder: Tuitions due January 19

Please remember that second-half tuition payments are due by Tuesday, January 19. The installment amount for Treble Choir singers is $110; for Youth Chorale singers the amount is $135.

Families wishing to apply for scholarships need to submit their applications no later than January 12. Please ask Steve Weston for a form at the next rehearsal or Email Kim Harris.

As a non-profit organization, BACC depends on tuition income for all choir activities. Your timely payments are most appreciated!

Calling all young singers ages 9-12: It’s time to audition!

Join us Thursday, January 14 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Essex Street, Bangor. [See Map] Artistic Director Steve Weston will audition new singers for our Treble Choir at this afternoon session. There’s no need to prepare a special audition piece—we will provide all materials.

Hi all, just thought I’d type a bit here so that I can get used to the idea of blogging regarding singing and choral arts.
As of this past Tuesday, I have to say that I am quite pleased with how these groups are singing and learning. I think that the biggest thing that has transpired is a sense of musical independence on the part of many of the young singers. Knowledge already known, but maybe not quite utilized as an individual in the musical process. The next thing? To further the development of these musical knowledge bases even further. Vocally? To implement continual vocal techniques while singing at ALL times. Easier said than done, for sure. As the Nutcracker comes up, quickly, I was ecstatic with that ending major third for 12 seconds or so. High e and g sharp in LOVELY tone and tuned impeccably. BRAVA ladies!!!
